Sambhar Recipe

Ingredients

  • doesn't not use a sambhar powder
  • Won't waste any more time here.. here is the thing
  • Pressure cook 1/2 a cup toor dal with 2 small onions ,turmeric, oil and about 11/2 cups of water until soft. Mash everything with onions, they wouldn't hold shape anyways
  • Grind 1/3-1/2 a cup of freshly grated coconut with 1/2 a teaspoon of cumin seeds and about 8 roasted byegegi/Kashmiri chillies using water

Preparation

  1. Now in a large pan make a tadka with some oil, mustard seeds,curry leaves and hing, sauté some shallots(make a huge difference, onions are fine too) and tomatoes until soft. Now add mushed dal, ground paste, tamarind (about a large marble sized )extract, salt and water and bring this to a boil and cook for 10-15 mins on low heat. Add a knob of jaggery to balance out the taste and lots of coriander. This must be of a light brothy consistency and not a thick sludge. Serve hot with idlis and Vadas Enjoy
