Delicious Gluten-Free Tempeh Burgers Option

Ingredients

  • 1 8oz block tempeh
  • 1 small onion
  • 2 slices bread
  • 3/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 3/4 teaspoon chili powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon chipotle powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1.5 tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 1 tablespoon gluten-free tamari or soy sauce
  • optional 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • salt to taste

Preparation

  1. Boil 1-8oz block tempeh gently for 5 minutes to reduce bitterness.

  2. Rinse tempeh under cold water.

  3. Use hands to crumble tempeh into mince-like pieces.

  4. Sauté 1 small onion in a little olive oil or vegetable broth.

  5. Add sautéed onion to tempeh crumbles.

  6. Crumble 2 slices bread into small chunks and mix into tempeh crumbles.

  7. Add 3/4 teaspoon smoked paprika, 3/4 teaspoon chili powder, 3/4 teaspoon chipotle powder, 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder, 1.5 tablespoons nutritional yeast, 1 tablespoon gluten-free tamari or soy sauce, and optional 2 teaspoons olive oil.

  8. Use hands to incorporate spices into the tempeh mixture.

  9. Add 2 tablespoons flour and mix well.

  10. Add salt to taste.

  11. Form mixture into about 5-6 burgers, each about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.

  12. Cook by baking on a lined sheet at 375°F until golden brown, flipping halfway through (about 20 minutes), or cook in a little oil in a non-stick fry pan.

  13. Note: For those who don’t like the taste of tempeh, this recipe makes it mild, and it's kid-friendly as per user feedback.
