Easy Tofu Fish Sticks with Tartar Sauce
Ingredients
Tofu fish sticks
- 1-14 oz block extra firm tofu
- 1/4 cup whole wheat pastry flour
- 1/3 cup cornmeal
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/2 tsp salt
Tartar sauce
- 1/2 cup vegan mayonnaise
- 2 tsp pickled horseradish
- 1/2 tsp lemon pepper
- 2 tsp fresh lemon juice
Optional additions
- pasta (optional)
- avocado
Preparation
Press the 1-14 oz block of extra firm tofu to remove excess liquid.
Cut into about 1/2 inch rectangles lengthwise.
Freeze on a baking sheet for about 24 hours.
Defrost and press the tofu pieces again to remove excess liquid.
Optionally, repeat the freezing process for better results, though not necessary.
Cut into 1/2 inch sticks.
Mix 1/4 cup whole wheat pastry flour, 1/3 cup cornmeal, 1/4 cup breadcrumbs, and 1/2 tsp salt.
Coat the tofu sticks thoroughly with the mixture.
Cook the tofu by baking on a lined baking sheet at 400°F until golden brown, air frying at 400°F until golden brown, or pan frying in 1/4 inch oil in a large skillet until golden brown on each side for about 4-5 minutes.
For the tartar sauce, mix 1/2 cup vegan mayonnaise, 2 tsp pickled horseradish, 1/2 tsp lemon pepper, and 2 tsp fresh lemon juice.
Serve the tofu fish sticks with the tartar sauce, optionally mixed with your favorite pasta and mashed avocado.
