Detroit Style Vegan Pizza

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbl nutritional yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (baby bath temp)

Preparation

  1. Whisk together all of the dry ingredients. Using a heavy spoon mix in the water. Once the dough comes together dump out onto a work surface and knead for 5 min until the dough is smooth. Add more flour as needed so it doesn't stick. ?

  2. Transfer dough to a lightly oiled bowl and cover. Let rise for 2 hours. ?

  3. Move oven rack to the lowest level. Preheat oven to 500 F. While your oven is heating spread 2 Tbl olive oil in a 9x13

  4. Put your choice of toppings right on the dough. I used my homemade pepperoni (find the recipe on my blog). Spread a layer of mozzarella cheese on top (about 2 cups) getting it all the way to the edges. I used @goodplanetfoods vegan mozz. (Traditional Detroit uses brick cheese.) Spread about a cup of pizza sauce on top of the cheese. But don't worry about evenly covering the top. ?

  5. Place the prepared pizza in the baking dish on the lowest rack and bake (uncovered) for 20 min. You should see plenty of bubbling action by that point. Remove from oven and let rest in the dish for 10 min. Run a knife along the edge to separate the cheese from the dish. Use a spatula to pry an end up and carefully transfer the pizza to a cutting board by letting it slide out of the dish
