Detroit Style Vegan Pizza

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups vegan mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup pizza sauce

Preparation

  1. Whisk together all of the dry ingredients.

  2. Using a heavy spoon, mix in the water.

  3. Once the dough comes together, dump it out onto a work surface and knead for 5 minutes until smooth, adding more flour as needed to prevent sticking.

  4. Transfer the dough to a lightly oiled bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 2 hours.

  5. Move the oven rack to the lowest level and preheat the oven to 500°F.

  6. While the oven is heating, spread 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a 9x13-inch glass baking dish.

  7. Place the dough into the dish and press it to the edges, then cover and let it rest for 15 minutes.

  8. Lightly oil your hands and press the dough to the edges of the pan, using fingertips to dimple the dough, then cover and let it rest for another 15 minutes.

  9. Add your choice of toppings directly on the dough.

  10. Spread a layer of mozzarella cheese on top, about 2 cups, ensuring it reaches the edges.

  11. Spread about a cup of pizza sauce on top of the cheese without evenly covering it.

  12. Place the prepared pizza on the lowest rack and bake uncovered for 20 minutes.

  13. Remove from the oven and let it rest in the dish for 10 minutes.

  14. Run a knife along the edge to separate the cheese from the dish.

  15. Use a spatula to pry up an end and carefully transfer the pizza to a cutting board.

  16. Cut and serve.
