Indian Spiced Thick Yellow Dal

Ingredients

  • Yellow lentils: 2/3rd C soaked in kettle boiled water for 30 mins and drained
  • Red lentils: 1/3rd C
  • Onion: 1 sliced
  • Ginger: 1 T grated
  • Passatta: 1 C
  • Water: 1C
  • Olive oil: 1T
  • Salt: 2 t
  • Spices
  • Bay leaves: 2
  • Cumin seeds: 2 t
  • Asafoetida: 1/2 t
  • Turmeric: 1 t
  • Garam Masala: 1 t
  • Kitchen King Masala: 2 t

Preparation

  1. Heat olive oil in a pan and when hot add bay leaves, asafoetida, turmeric and cumin seeds

  2. Next add ginger, onions and salt. Cook till onions go translucent

  3. Add passata to the pan along with the remaining spices and cook stirring for 5-7 minutes

  4. Add the lentils and water. Cover pan with a lid and let the mixture cook on a low heat for 20-25 minutes till dal is soft and much

  5. Check every 10 minutes and stir in water (1/2 cup at a time) if required
