Tadka Dal Lentil Dish

Ingredients

  • 50g red lentils
  • 100g channa dal lentils
  • 2 inch piece ginger
  • 1 red chilli
  • 1/2 white onion
  • 5 cloves garlic
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 800ml veg stock
  • Olive oil, salt & pepper

Preparation

  1. Prep the vegetables by cutting the onion into half moons and dicing the chilli, ginger and garlic.

  2. Have the lentils ready by giving them a little rinse.

  3. Heat a pan and let it heat up, then add oil.

  4. Throw in the onions and brown them for about 5 minutes.

  5. Add the ginger, garlic and chilli, and fry for 1 minute or so.

  6. Add in the spices and stir everything around.

  7. Pour in the lentils and stir everything together.

  8. Pour in the stock, bring to a boil and then reduce to simmer.

  9. If it looks dry then add more stock.

  10. Stir occasionally and cook for 25 minutes or until the lentils are soft.

  11. Serve with warm fluffy chapati or rice.
