Vegan Chinese BBQ Ribs

Ingredients

  • 1 package soy tempeh
  • 2 tbs agave
  • 1/2 tsp Chinese five spice powder
  • 1/2 cup teriyaki sauce
  • 1 tbs Chinese rice wine (Also known as Mirin)
  • 1 tbs White vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tbs White Miso
  • 2 tsp Liquid smoke
  • 2 tbs peanut or untoasted sesame oil
  • About 10 drops Red food coloring

Preparation

  1. Cut the tempeh into desired pieces; for example, cut in half lengthwise, then in half again, and filet in half.

  2. Steam the tempeh pieces for 10 minutes.

  3. While the tempeh is steaming, mix together the rest of the ingredients except for 1 tablespoon of peanut oil in a dish and set aside.

  4. After steaming, add the tempeh to the sauce mixture.

  5. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the remaining tablespoon of peanut oil, then add the tempeh and cook for 5-7 minutes. Flip and cook for another 5-7 minutes until browned and crisp on each side.
