Punjabi Style Raw Banana Curry

Ingredients

  • 2 bananas
  • 2 medium red onions
  • 1 tablespoon garlic and ginger paste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Mustard oil
  • 2 cups tomato puree
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon Kashmiri red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 2 cardamom pods
  • 1/2 cup coconut cream
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2-3 cups water

Preparation

  1. Peel the skin of raw bananas, cut them lengthwise, and pan fry them in mustard oil until cooked. You can use regular oil too.

  2. Add chopped onion, ginger, and garlic to a mixer and make a fine paste.

  3. Heat oil in a pan, add bay leaves, cardamom pods, and cumin seeds, sauté for a few seconds, then add the ground paste and sauté until golden brown and the rawness of onions is gone.

  4. Add tomato puree, turmeric, coriander powder, red chili powder, and garam masala, and sauté for a few minutes.

  5. Once the masala is cooked and starts leaving oil from the sides, add the fried bananas and mix well. Add 2 to 3 cups of water, salt to taste, and allow it to boil for 5 to 10 minutes on low medium heat.

  6. When the gravy thickens, switch off the heat, add coconut cream and fresh coriander leaves, and serve hot with rice and parathas.
