Two Lentil Dal

Ingredients

  • tomatoes: 3
  • onions: 2
  • ginger: 1 inch grated
  • curry leaves: 3-4(optional)
  • garlic: 2 cloves minced
  • tomato paste: 1 t
  • spinach: 3 c
  • chana dal: 3/4 c cooked
  • masoor dal : 1/4 c cooked ?
  • whole spices:
  • cumin seeds: 1 t
  • mustard seeds: 1 t
  • cinnamon: 1 inch
  • asafoetida: 1/2 t
  • spice powder:
  • coriander powder: 2 t
  • turmeric: 1
  • red chilli: 2 t
  • garam masala: 2 t
  • oil: 2 t
  • water: 1c
  • salt to taste

Preparation

  1. Add tomatoes and peeled onions to boiling water

  2. Boil for 5-7 minutes

  3. Drain and blend into a paste with the listed spice powders

  4. Heat oil in a pan and add listed whole spices, ginger, garlic, curry leaves and tomato paste

  5. Cook for a few minutes and add the prepared paste

  6. Cook stirring till oil separates then add lentils and water -bring to a simmer and stir in spinach

  7. Season as desired
