Chapati

Ingredients

  • 450g wholemeal wheat flour/atta
  • 3/4 cup of warm water
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • ghee

Preparation

  1. Add water to the bowl of flour a little at a time mixing as you go with your hand

  2. Add the oil and knead the dough until it’s smooth and pliable

  3. Cover and leave to rest for 2 hours

  4. Knead the dough again and roll out to a long sausage and divide and roll into 12 small balls

  5. Flatten each ball and dust with flour

  6. With a rolling pin roll out evenly into a round shape, turning the roti over often and dusting as you go

  7. Heat a frying pan or tawa on a medium heat until bubbles start to form in the flat bread

  8. Turn over and heat for another minute or so until brown spots start to form

  9. Put the roti on a handheld wire toaster and let it puff up

  10. Serve hot as is or with a dollop of ghee on top (the latter being my preference)
