Classic Homemade American Donuts with Glaze and Toppings
Ingredients
Dough
- 500 g all-purpose flour
- 200 g lukewarm milk
- 30 g fresh yeast
- 60 g butter
- 50 g sugar
- 1 medium egg
- 2 medium egg yolks
- 5 g salt
- 1 tsp vanilla flavor
Frying and glazing
- 500 g frying oil
- 400 g glaze of choice (e.g., chocolate glaze or sugar glaze)
- 80 g decorative sugar or chocolate sprinkles
Preparation
Crumble the yeast into the lukewarm milk and stir until dissolved
Sift the flour into a large bowl
Add the yeast milk and all remaining dough ingredients to the bowl
Knead the dough with a dough hook for at least 5 minutes
Turn the dough out onto a floured work surface and knead by hand for 5 minutes
Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 30 minutes
Roll out the dough on a floured work surface
Cut out circles using a 10 cm diameter cookie cutter
Cut out a smaller circle in the center of each circle using a piping tip or small cutter
Heat the frying oil in a small pot to 180°C
Fry the donuts one by one until golden brown, about 4 minutes per side
Drain the fried donuts on paper towels to absorb excess oil
Prepare or melt the glaze and pour into a deep bowl
Dip each donut halfway into the glaze
Immediately decorate with sprinkles or decorative sugar
Let the glaze set
