Indian Spiced Basmati Rice
Ingredients
- 1 tsp oil, to coat bottom of pan
- 1 cup basmati rice
- 1 1/2 cups boiling water
Optional spices
- 1 tsp black mustard seeds
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 2 bay leaves
- a 3" cinnamon stick
- pinch of salt
Preparation
Rinse rice until draining water is clear, and optionally soak in cool water for 20-30 minutes before rinsing, then let drain in a fine mesh strainer.
Pour oil into pot and spread across bottom.
Add rice and any added spices.
Bring water to boil in a kettle or microwave, then pour into rice pot and turn heat to high.
Stir until water is vigorously boiling, then turn heat to medium-low, cover, and cook undisturbed for 10 minutes.
Turn off heat and let rest for 10 minutes before fluffing with a fork to serve.
Tips
Rinsing and soaking the rice helps prevent sticking by removing excess starch, but it can be omitted for good results.
Use a rice cooker for a simpler preparation method that requires less attention.
Season the rice subtly with spices to enhance its natural aroma and flavor without overpowering it.
