Pepper Potatoes with Millet Khichari

Ingredients

  • potatoes: 4 peeled and diced
  • onions: 2 minced
  • ginger: 1 inch minced
  • cumin seeds: 2 t
  • garam masala: 1 t
  • black pepper powder: 2 t
  • salt to taste
  • oil: 3 t
  • millet seeds: 1 c
  • red lentils: 1/2c
  • cardamom: 2
  • pepper corns: 4-5
  • bay leaf: 1
  • cinnamon stick: 2 cm
  • turmeric: 1 t
  • chilli powder: 2 t
  • water: 4 1/2 c
  • for tempering:
  • oil: 2t
  • cumin seeds: 1 t
  • mustard seeds: 1 t
  • garlic: 1 clove
  • asafoetida: 1 t
  • dried red chilli: 1-2

Preparation

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin, ginger and onions

  2. Cook on a low flame frequently stirring till onions begin to brown

  3. Mix in potatoes, garam masala, pepper and salt

  4. Cover pan with a lid and cook till potatoes are soft

  5. You will have to gently turn potatoes from time to time scarping the bottom of the pan

  6. For millet khichari

  7. Add millet to a pot and roast on a low flame for few minutes till fragrant

  8. Add the remaining ingredients to the pot and cook with a lid on till water absorbs
