Homemade Vegan Naan Bread
Ingredients
- 3 cups (375g) All Purpose Flour
- 2 tsp Instant Yeast
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 cup (240ml) + 2 Tbsp (30ml) Warm Water (Not Hot)
- 1 Tbsp (15ml) Maple Syrup
Preparation
Add the flour, yeast and salt to a mixing bowl and mix together.
Add the maple syrup to the warm water and mix in.
Pour the warm water over the flour mix and stir in with a spoon. Flour your hands and a work surface and knead the dough about 20 times until it forms a ball.
Place the dough in an oiled dish, turn it to coat lightly with oil, cover with a cloth, and let it rise for 30 minutes.
After rising, place the dough on a parchment-lined board or floured mat and cut into 8 even pieces.
Heat a non-stick frying pan with a small amount of olive oil.
Roll out each naan into an oval shape and cook until browned on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
Repeat for the remaining naan breads, adding more oil if the pan becomes too dry.
Optional variations
For garlic naan, dampen the surface with water, add crushed garlic, press it in, and fry as usual.
For butter naan, brush with melted vegan butter during or after cooking, and optionally sprinkle with sea salt.
