Chinese BBQ Char Siu Rice

Ingredients

Chili sauce

  • 4-5 red jalapenos
  • 3 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 slice ginger
  • dash of salt

Flavored rice

  • 1 cup Jasmine rice
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 3 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 cups water

Bbq tofu

  • 1 pack firm tofu (16 oz)
  • oil (for frying)

Char siu sauce

  • 4 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons garlic chili sauce
  • 1.5 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 4 tablespoons water
  • dash of berry powder (optional)

Preparation

  1. Blend the chili sauce ingredients until well combined, taste and add more salt if needed, then refrigerate until ready to use

  2. In a heated pot with sesame oil, sauté minced garlic and grated ginger until fragrant

  3. Add rinsed Jasmine rice and stir continuously

  4. Add water and salt, bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for about 18 minutes

  5. Turn off heat, cover, and let rest for 15-20 minutes, and prepare the tofu while waiting

  6. Drain the firm tofu well and cut into 3 long logs

  7. Shallow pan fry the tofu in oil until golden brown

  8. Mix the char siu sauce ingredients until well combined

  9. Pour the char siu sauce into a pan and bring to a boil, then simmer until it thickens slightly

  10. Slowly add the fried tofu to the sauce and coat well until the sauce becomes stickier

  11. Turn off heat and cut the tofu into 1/2 inch thick pieces

  12. Use a fork to fluff the rice when ready

  13. Serve the flavored rice with the BBQ tofu and chili sauce to taste
