Pan-Fried Balsamic Tofu

Ingredients

  • 1 block extra firm tofu, pressed and drained
  • 2 tbsp olive oil, divided
  • 1 tbsp tamari
  • 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp dry basil
  • 1/2 tsp thyme
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
  • 7–8 fresh basil leaves
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation

  1. Press and drain the tofu to remove excess moisture

  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a pan and pan fry the tofu on both sides with a pinch of salt and pepper until browned

  3. In a small bowl, add the tamari, balsamic vinegar, maple syrup, Dijon mustard, dry basil, thyme, red pepper flakes, and fennel seeds, then whisk together to combine

  4. Pour the mixture into the pan with the tofu

  5. Sauté the tofu with the sauce for 3-5 minutes or until the sauce has reduced

  6. Remove from heat, stir in the fresh basil leaves, and spoon the tofu and some sauce onto a plate

Tips

  1. If you cannot press the tofu, use super firm tofu instead to ensure proper texture
