Blackened Tofu with Spices

Ingredients

  • 1 package of 14oz extra/super firm tofu
  • 6 tbsps of olive oil
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp onion powder

Preparation

  1. Remove the tofu from its packaging and cut it into cubes or strips

  2. Add the cut tofu to a freezer bag or container and freeze it overnight or until completely solid

  3. When ready to cook, let the tofu thaw out at room temperature

  4. Once thawed, use a kitchen towel to gently squeeze some of the excess water from the tofu

  5. Combine all seasonings in a small bowl

  6. Cut up the tofu and add it to a shallow dish or small bowl, then add 2 tablespoons of oil and all of the seasonings, and mix well so that each piece is fully seasoned

  7. Add 4 tablespoons of oil to a non-stick skillet over medium heat and heat until hot, testing with a small piece of tofu if needed

  8. Add the tofu cubes or strips to the skillet and cook on each side until browned

Tips

  1. Serve with your choice of sides, such as sautéed greens and dairy-free cheesy grits
