Middle Eastern Basbousa Tart Dessert
Ingredients
Dough
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup soft butter
- 6 cubes soft cream cheese
Basbousa mixture
- 1/2 cup semolina
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup corn oil
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup clotted cream or thick cream
- 1/2 cup shredded coconut
For serving
- syrup (sherbet or sugar syrup)
For decoration
- sliced almonds
Preparation
Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a tart pan.
Mix the dough ingredients together and press evenly into the prepared tart pan.
In a separate bowl, combine the basbousa mixture ingredients until well blended.
Spread the basbousa mixture over the dough layer in the pan.
Bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until golden brown and set.
While the tart is baking, prepare the syrup by boiling sugar and water until it thickens.
Remove the tart from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over it.
Decorate with sliced almonds and allow to cool before serving.
