Pan-Fried Scallion and Toasted Sesame Buns
Ingredients
- Oil and water, for cooking
- More chopped spring onions and sesame seeds, for topping
- 1 cup warm soy milk or other plant milk
- 1 tbsp sesame oil*
- 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp instant yeast
- 1/4 cup (55g) sugar
- 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds*
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 cups (120g) chopped scallions
- 1/2 tsp Chinese five spice powder
- 2 tsp toasted sesame seeds*
- 1/3 cup hot neutral oil
Preparation
Heat a pan for toasting sesame seeds.
Once the pan is hot, add the sesame seeds.
Cook over medium heat until lightly brown, moving them around to toast evenly.
Leave the toasted sesame seeds to cool and place in an air-tight container for future use.
In a large bowl, mix together the dry ingredients.
Mix warm soy milk and oil.
Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture while mixing until a dough is formed.
Shape the dough into a ball.
Knead the dough for a few minutes, around 20-30 times.
Brush the bowl with some oil then place the dough in it.
Cover the dough with a towel and let it rest for at least 2 hours to let it rise.
Place the scallions, salt, five spice powder, and sesame seeds in a bowl and mix well.
Heat the oil by microwaving at high for around 2.5 minutes.
Pour the hot oil over the scallion mixture and mix well then set aside.
After the dough has risen, divide it into 12 portions
Roll each portion into a circle and add the filling
Seal the edges and shape into buns
Heat oil in a pan and pan-fry the buns until golden brown on both sides
Top with additional chopped spring onions and sesame seeds before serving
