Pan Fried Bao Buns
Ingredients
Dough
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon instant yeast
- 1.5 cups water
Filling
- shredded cabbage
- shredded carrot
- tofu crumbles
- cilantro
- grated ginger
Preparation
Whisk together the dry ingredients
Add in the water, mix, then knead until smooth for about 7 to 10 minutes
Place the dough into an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size for about an hour
Divide the dough into 20 equal pieces, roll each into a ball on a non-floured work surface, place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let rest for 20 minutes
Prepare the filling and ensure it is cool before use
Roll out each dough ball, spoon in about 2 to 3 tablespoons of filling, and shape into buns
Heat a large non-stick pan with about 1 to 2 teaspoons of oil, place the shaped buns in the pan with some space between them, and cook for 2 minutes
Add water to reach about one-quarter up the sides of the buns, cover immediately, and cook until all the water is gone for about 5 minutes
Remove the buns from the pan and place on a wire rack to cool, then repeat the process for remaining buns
Tips
Enjoy the bao buns as is or with a dipping sauce made by mixing chili oil, sesame oil, soy sauce, and ginger to taste
