Pan Fried Bao Buns

Ingredients

Dough

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 1.5 cups water

Filling

  • shredded cabbage
  • shredded carrot
  • tofu crumbles
  • cilantro
  • grated ginger

Preparation

  1. Whisk together the dry ingredients

  2. Add in the water, mix, then knead until smooth for about 7 to 10 minutes

  3. Place the dough into an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size for about an hour

  4. Divide the dough into 20 equal pieces, roll each into a ball on a non-floured work surface, place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let rest for 20 minutes

  5. Prepare the filling and ensure it is cool before use

  6. Roll out each dough ball, spoon in about 2 to 3 tablespoons of filling, and shape into buns

  7. Heat a large non-stick pan with about 1 to 2 teaspoons of oil, place the shaped buns in the pan with some space between them, and cook for 2 minutes

  8. Add water to reach about one-quarter up the sides of the buns, cover immediately, and cook until all the water is gone for about 5 minutes

  9. Remove the buns from the pan and place on a wire rack to cool, then repeat the process for remaining buns

Tips

  1. Enjoy the bao buns as is or with a dipping sauce made by mixing chili oil, sesame oil, soy sauce, and ginger to taste
