Sticky Lemon Pepper Tofu

Ingredients

  • 1 block (450g) firm tofu
  • 1/2 cup corn starch
  • Juice from 1 lemon
  • 1/2 tsp lemon zest
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup or agave
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tsp corn starch slurry (1 tsp cornstarch dissolved in water)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp chopped green onion (garnish)
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp chili flakes (garnish)

Preparation

  1. Cut tofu into bite-size triangle pieces.

  2. Coat tofu with corn starch.

  3. Fry tofu in hot oil until all sides are lightly crispy and set aside.

  4. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan.

  5. Add maple syrup or agave, lemon juice, lemon zest, water, corn starch slurry, and stir until sauce reduces to a sticky consistency with bubbles throughout.

  6. Mix in the crispy tofu pieces until they are all coated.

  7. Add salt and pepper.

  8. Garnish with chili flakes and green onions.

Tips

  1. To give your food a divine char, turn up the burner to high heat during the last 15 seconds of cooking and move the tofu around quickly to char without burning.
