Vegan Sticky Sesame Cauliflower Wings

Ingredients

Cauliflower wings

  • 1 head cauliflower
  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 cup brown rice flour (or all-purpose flour)
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper

Sesame sticky sauce

  • 1 teaspoon avocado oil
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons organic brown sugar or coconut sugar
  • 2 teaspoons rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons tamari or soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup organic ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds

For serving

  • green onions
  • white or brown rice

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Prepare the batter by mixing the brown rice flour, sea salt, and ground pepper together, then adding the almond milk. Stir with a whisk or fork until well combined; the batter should be thick but pourable to stick to the cauliflower. If it is too runny, it won't stick.

  3. Once the oven is preheated, coat the cauliflower florets one at a time in the batter, shaking off excess, and place them on the baking sheet with 1 inch of space between each. Bake for 30 minutes.

  4. While the cauliflower bakes, combine all sauce ingredients except the garlic and avocado oil in a bowl. Heat 1 tablespoon of avocado oil in a large pan over medium heat, add the minced garlic, and cook for 30 seconds. Add the sauce mixture and bring to a simmer, cooking for 3-4 minutes until thickened.

  5. Add the baked cauliflower wings to the pan with the sauce and toss to coat. Sprinkle with additional sesame seeds and green onions, then serve with rice.

Tips

  1. This sauce is versatile and can be used in veggie stir-fries with eggplant, mushrooms, or noodles.
