Lofthouse-Style Frosted Sugar Cookies

Ingredients

Dough

  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon starch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar with fine granules
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup sour cream or heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract

Frosting

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons milk

Decoration

  • Colorful candy

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, prepare rimmed baking sheets, and line with parchment paper.

  2. For the dough: Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, starch, and salt and set aside.

  3. In a mixer bowl, place the butter and sugar and using the paddle attachment, beat on medium speed until very smooth.

  4. Add the egg, sour cream, and beat, then add the vanilla and almond extract.

  5. Add the flour mixture and stir to combine.

  6. Divide the dough into 2-inch balls, place on the baking sheets with space between them, and press to flatten into disks.

  7. Bake for 9 to 10 minutes and let cool completely.

  8. For the frosting: In a bowl, place the butter, sugar, vanilla, and using an electric mixer, beat until smooth, gradually adding milk to achieve a light frosting and add color as desired.

  9. Spread the frosting on the cookies, sprinkle with candy, and serve.
