Blackened Tofu Nourish Bowl

Ingredients

  • 1-14oz block extra-firm tofu
  • 2 tbsp tamari or soy sauce
  • 3 tsp paprika
  • 1-1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1-1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1-1/2 tsp finely ground black pepper
  • 1-1/2 tsp corn starch
  • about 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp chipotle powder
  • optional: small amount of toasted sesame oil or oil of choice

Preparation

  1. Press and pat dry 1-14oz block extra-firm tofu, removing excess liquid.

  2. Cut tofu into 6 rectangular pieces.

  3. Marinate tofu slabs in 2 tbsp tamari or soy sauce in a shallow dish for about 10 minutes, flipping halfway.

  4. Meanwhile, mix spices: 3 tsp paprika, 1-1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1-1/2 tsp onion powder, 1-1/2 tsp finely ground black pepper, 1-1/2 tsp corn starch, about 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste), 1/4 tsp chipotle powder.

  5. Press tofu slabs into spice mixture, making sure to generously coat both sides.

  6. Option 1: Heat a small amount of toasted sesame oil (or oil of choice) in a non-stick skillet and cook both sides until a dark crust forms.

  7. Option 2 (oil-free): Bake tofu on a lined baking sheet at 400F until a crust forms, about 25 minutes, flipping halfway.
