Healthy Oil-Free Indian Khichdi with Spices

Ingredients

  • 2-3 cups brown or basmati rice
  • 1/2 cup masoor dal
  • 1 cup chopped onions
  • 3 green chillies sliced
  • 1 tablespoon chopped mint
  • 6 cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon shah jeera
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger garlic paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • salt to taste

Preparation

  1. Mix the rice and masoor dal.

  2. Wash and soak this in water for 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.

  3. In a pot add cloves, cinnamon and shah jeera.

  4. Add the onions and ginger garlic paste.

  5. Saute the onions in a teaspoon of water until browned.

  6. Add turmeric, green chillies and mint and mix well.

  7. Add the soaked and drained rice and masoor dal, mix together.

  8. Add 5 cups of water and mix everything.

  9. Cover and cook till the rice and lentils are done on slow flame or in a rice cooker.

  10. Serve hot with tomato chutney and chickpea flour veggie omelettes. Enjoy!
