Balsamic Baked Tempeh

Ingredients

  • 1 8oz. package of tempeh
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons tamari
  • 2 teaspoons maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable broth or water
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil, or an additional 1 tablespoon vegetable broth to keep it oil free
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dijon mustard

Preparation

  1. Slice tempeh into 1/4 strips

  2. Steam in a covered pan for 20 minutes

  3. While tempeh steaks prepare marinade by whisking all remaining ingredients in a small bowl

  4. When tempeh is steamed, remove from heat and drain any excess water

  5. Return to stove and place on a cool burner

  6. Add marinade while tempeh is still warm

  7. Toss tempeh to coat evenly with marinade

  8. Let sit for at least 20 minutes, or as long as overnight in the fridge

  9. Now you can either remove the marinated tempeh and bake on a liner baking sheet for 20-25 minutes in a 400 degree oven, or turn the heat back on under your pan and cook the tempeh directly in the pan you marinated it in!
