Traditional Arabic Basbousa Dessert

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup semolina
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup coconut
  • 1 cup corn oil
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 large egg

For greasing the pan

  • 3 tablespoons tahini

For serving

  • 1/2 to 1 cup syrup

For garnishing

  • coconut
  • finely ground pistachios

Preparation

  1. Set the rack in the middle of the oven and preheat the oven to 180°C.

  2. Prepare a 13-inch round pan and grease it with a little tahini.

  3. In a deep bowl, combine sugar, semolina, flour, coconut, yogurt, vanilla extract, baking powder, and egg. Mix with a wide plastic spoon for one minute until well combined.

  4. Pour the mixture into the pan and level the surface.

  5. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

  6. Remove from the oven and immediately pour hot syrup over it. Garnish with coconut and pistachios.

  7. Let it cool completely then cut into pieces for serving.
