Quick Thai Basil Chili Tofu

Ingredients

  • 16 oz firm tofu
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon red jalapeno, chopped
  • 1/2 cup Thai basil, packed
  • neutral oil
  • salt, to taste
  • your favorite grain, for serving

Sauce

  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce or tamari
  • 1/2 tablespoon stir fry sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dark soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup or sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 3/4 cup water

Preparation

  1. Mix together the sauce ingredients in a small bowl until well combined and set aside

  2. Heat a non-stick pan with 2 teaspoons of oil over medium heat

  3. Pan-fry the tofu cubes until lightly browned on all sides, flipping occasionally

  4. Season the tofu with a pinch of salt

  5. Transfer the tofu to a bowl and let cool

  6. Using the same pan, add another teaspoon of oil

  7. Sauté the ginger, then add the garlic and sauté until fragrant

  8. Add the chopped red jalapeno

  9. Add the tofu and the sauce, then the Thai basil

  10. Toss quickly with a spatula until all tofu is coated with sauce

  11. Season with additional salt if needed

  12. Serve warm with your favorite grain
