Classic German Butter Cookies for Any Season
Ingredients
Dough
- 125 g cold butter
- 200 g all-purpose flour (Type 405)
- 100 g granulated sugar
- 1 packet vanilla sugar
- 1 large egg
- all-purpose flour, for dusting
Glaze and decoration
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 6 tablespoons powdered sugar
- assorted decorative sugars
Preparation
Knead cold butter, all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, vanilla sugar, and egg to form a smooth dough
Chill the dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) conventional or 160°C (320°F) convection
Dust the work surface with flour
Roll out the dough to about 5 mm thickness on the floured surface
Cut out cookies using cookie cutters of your choice
Place the cookies directly on the baking sheet
Bake in the preheated oven for 7 to 10 minutes per sheet
Let the cookies cool completely
Mix powdered sugar and lemon juice to make the glaze
Spread the glaze over the cookies with a teaspoon
Decorate with assorted decorative sugars
Let the glaze set
