Oma's Classic German Walnut Cookies

Ingredients

  • 200 g ground walnuts
  • 360 g all-purpose flour
  • 140 g powdered sugar
  • 250 g butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

For decoration

  • 100 g dark chocolate, chopped
  • 200 g walnut halves

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 150°C (300°F) conventional or 130°C (265°F) fan-forced

  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper

  3. Spread ground walnuts on the prepared baking sheet and roast for about 10 minutes

  4. Let walnuts cool completely

  5. Sift flour and powdered sugar into a bowl

  6. Add cooled walnuts, butter pieces, egg, and cinnamon

  7. Knead to form a dough

  8. Shape dough into a log and chill for 3 hours

  9. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F) conventional or 160°C (320°F) fan-forced

  10. Slice the chilled dough log into thin rounds and shape each into a ball

  11. Press a walnut half onto the top of each ball

  12. Bake for about 12 minutes until golden

  13. Chop dark chocolate and melt in a double boiler

  14. Once cookies are cooled, decorate with melted chocolate as desired
