Oma's Classic German Walnut Cookies
Ingredients
- 200 g ground walnuts
- 360 g all-purpose flour
- 140 g powdered sugar
- 250 g butter
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
For decoration
- 100 g dark chocolate, chopped
- 200 g walnut halves
Preparation
Preheat oven to 150°C (300°F) conventional or 130°C (265°F) fan-forced
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper
Spread ground walnuts on the prepared baking sheet and roast for about 10 minutes
Let walnuts cool completely
Sift flour and powdered sugar into a bowl
Add cooled walnuts, butter pieces, egg, and cinnamon
Knead to form a dough
Shape dough into a log and chill for 3 hours
Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F) conventional or 160°C (320°F) fan-forced
Slice the chilled dough log into thin rounds and shape each into a ball
Press a walnut half onto the top of each ball
Bake for about 12 minutes until golden
Chop dark chocolate and melt in a double boiler
Once cookies are cooled, decorate with melted chocolate as desired
