Baked Egg and Cheese Sandwiches

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 large egg
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 2/3 cup warm milk
  • 3 tablespoons corn oil

Filling

  • 8 slices cheddar cheese
  • 8 boiled eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon za'atar with sesame

Preparation

  1. Using a fork, beat the egg and set aside about half for glazing.

  2. In a mixer bowl, place 2 cups of flour, sugar, salt, and yeast, attach the dough hook, and run for a few seconds to mix the ingredients, then add milk and oil, and run until you get a smooth dough, adding flour as needed.

  3. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size.

  4. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius and set the middle rack, using shallow pans.

  5. Cut the dough into circles and roll slightly to form an oval shape for easy stuffing.

  6. Place a cheese slice and half an egg with the cut side down, then sprinkle salt, pepper, cumin, and za'atar as desired.

  7. Brush the sides of the dough with the remaining beaten egg.

  8. Fold the dough over the filling, place in the pans spaced apart, and let rest for a few minutes.

  9. Brush the top of the dough with egg and sprinkle salt, pepper, cumin, and za'atar as desired.

  10. Bake the sandwiches for about 20 minutes until golden brown and serve warm.
