Vegan Deep Dish Pizza
Ingredients
Dough
- 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup cornmeal
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp instant yeast
- 1/2 cup + 2 tbsp warm water
- 1/4 cup melted vegan butter
Tomato sauce
- drizzle of olive oil
- 1/2 medium onion (grated)
- 2 cloves of minced garlic
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 can of crushed tomatoes (500 g / 17.6 oz)
- 1/2 tsp oregano
- 1/2 tsp basil
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp sugar
Toppings
- vegan cheese slices
- vegan shredded cheese
- fresh spinach
- vegan parmesan
Preparation
Add the dough ingredients to a stand mixer and mix.
Once a ball of dough is formed, place it in a bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1.5 hours.
To make the sauce, add olive oil, grated onion, and minced garlic to a pan and cook for 2-3 minutes.
Add tomato paste, spices, and crushed tomatoes, then cook on low heat for 30 minutes until thickened.
Once the dough has doubled in size, grease a springform pan with vegan butter and press the dough into the pan, flattening the bottom and shaping it up the sides.
Add layers of cheese slices, grated vegan cheese, spinach, sauce, and top with vegan parmesan.
Bake at 425°F (225°C) for 25 minutes, uncovered for the first 15 minutes, then covered with foil for the remaining 10 minutes.
Allow the pizza to cool for 15 minutes before removing from the pan.
Top with additional parmesan and fresh basil, slice, and serve.
Tips
Ensure the water temperature is between 120°F and 130°F when mixing the dough to avoid killing the yeast.
