Vegan Nashville Hot Tofu Nuggets

Ingredients

  • 1 Block Extra firm tofu
  • 1 C. Almond milk or other non dairy milk
  • 1 tsp. Apple cider vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp. + 1 tsp. Hot sauce, divided
  • 1 C. All purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. Salt, divided
  • 2 C. Panko bread crumbs
  • 1/4 C. Vegan butter, I used Earth Balance
  • 3 Tbsp. Olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp. Agave syrup
  • 1 tsp. Paprika
  • 1/2 tsp. Garlic powder

Preparation

  1. Press the tofu to remove excess water

  2. Cut the tofu into nugget-sized pieces

  3. In a bowl, mix almond milk, apple cider vinegar, and 1 teaspoon hot sauce to create a buttermilk substitute

  4. In another bowl, combine flour with part of the salt

  5. Set up a breading station: dip tofu pieces in the buttermilk mixture, then coat in flour, and finally in panko bread crumbs

  6. Fry or bake the breaded tofu until golden and crispy

  7. In a separate pan, melt vegan butter with olive oil, then stir in the remaining hot sauce, agave syrup, paprika, garlic powder, and the rest of the salt to make the spicy sauce

  8. Toss the cooked tofu nuggets in the spicy sauce until well coated
