Kunafa with Custard and Cream
Ingredients
- 500 grams kunafa
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1 cup melted butter
Custard
- 4 cups milk
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup starch
- 6 large egg yolks
- 2 teaspoons liquid vanilla
- 10 ground mastic
- a pinch of salt
- 2 tablespoons butter
Cream
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1/3 cup powdered sugar
Garnish
- chopped walnuts
- cinnamon
Preparation
Prepare the custard by combining milk, sugar, starch, egg yolks, vanilla, ground mastic, salt, and butter in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and set aside.
Whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar until soft peaks form.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Mix the kunafa with melted butter until well coated.
Spread half of the kunafa mixture in a greased baking dish.
Pour the custard over the kunafa layer and spread evenly.
Add the whipped cream over the custard layer.
Top with the remaining kunafa mixture and press down gently.
Bake for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
Remove from the oven and immediately drizzle with warm syrup.
Serving suggestions
Garnish with chopped walnuts and cinnamon before serving.
Serve warm with additional syrup if desired.
