Homemade Baked Beans
Ingredients
- 2 garlic cloves, mashed
- 1.5 tbsp oil
- 300ml crushed tomatoes (or passata)
- 225g beans (chickpeas or navy beans)
- 1/2 tsp liquid smoke
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1/2 tsp thyme
- 1/4 tsp chili flakes
- 1 tsp oregano
- Black pepper
- Salt
- Pinch of sugar
- 2-3 tbsp water or vegetable broth (if necessary)
Preparation
In a pot, add some oil and the mashed garlic. Allow it to simmer until golden brown.
Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, liquid smoke, seasoning, and a pinch of sugar. Mix well and simmer over medium/low heat for 20-25 minutes.
Add the beans and mix. If necessary, add water or vegetable broth and simmer for an additional 10-15 minutes.
Taste the baked beans and adjust the seasoning if needed.
