Homemade Baked Beans

Ingredients

  • 2 garlic cloves, mashed
  • 1.5 tbsp oil
  • 300ml crushed tomatoes (or passata)
  • 225g beans (chickpeas or navy beans)
  • 1/2 tsp liquid smoke
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/2 tsp thyme
  • 1/4 tsp chili flakes
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • Black pepper
  • Salt
  • Pinch of sugar
  • 2-3 tbsp water or vegetable broth (if necessary)

Preparation

  1. In a pot, add some oil and the mashed garlic. Allow it to simmer until golden brown.

  2. Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, liquid smoke, seasoning, and a pinch of sugar. Mix well and simmer over medium/low heat for 20-25 minutes.

  3. Add the beans and mix. If necessary, add water or vegetable broth and simmer for an additional 10-15 minutes.

  4. Taste the baked beans and adjust the seasoning if needed.

  5. Serve and enjoy!
