Easy Vegan Naan Bread
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (or whole-wheat pastry flour)
- 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsweetened non-dairy yogurt
- 1/2 cup slightly warm unsweetened non-dairy milk (soy or similar)
- 1/2 teaspoon maple syrup
- Neutral oil for cooking (e.g., canola or vegetable)
- Vegan butter for brushing
Preparation
Add dry ingredients to a large bowl and whisk to combine.
Add wet ingredients to a medium bowl and whisk well to combine.
Gradually add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix to combine.
Use hands to gently incorporate ingredients and form a ball; dough will be sticky but that's okay.
Transfer dough to a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let rest in a warm place for about 1.5 hours.
Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead for 4-5 minutes, adding more flour if sticky.
Divide dough into 8 equal parts by forming a boule shape and slicing like a pie; use a pastry cutter if available.
Roll each section into a ball with hands and cover balls with a damp kitchen towel.
Remove one ball at a time and use a rolling pin to form an oval shape; repeat for all 8 balls.
Heat a little neutral-flavored oil in a non-stick skillet over high heat.
Cook dough until large air bubbles form, then turn over and cook for another 2 minutes or until browned.
Melt vegan butter in a saucepan and brush each naan with the melted butter.
