Easy Vegan Naan Bread

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (or whole-wheat pastry flour)
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened non-dairy yogurt
  • 1/2 cup slightly warm unsweetened non-dairy milk (soy or similar)
  • 1/2 teaspoon maple syrup
  • Neutral oil for cooking (e.g., canola or vegetable)
  • Vegan butter for brushing

Preparation

  1. Add dry ingredients to a large bowl and whisk to combine.

  2. Add wet ingredients to a medium bowl and whisk well to combine.

  3. Gradually add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix to combine.

  4. Use hands to gently incorporate ingredients and form a ball; dough will be sticky but that's okay.

  5. Transfer dough to a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let rest in a warm place for about 1.5 hours.

  6. Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead for 4-5 minutes, adding more flour if sticky.

  7. Divide dough into 8 equal parts by forming a boule shape and slicing like a pie; use a pastry cutter if available.

  8. Roll each section into a ball with hands and cover balls with a damp kitchen towel.

  9. Remove one ball at a time and use a rolling pin to form an oval shape; repeat for all 8 balls.

  10. Heat a little neutral-flavored oil in a non-stick skillet over high heat.

  11. Cook dough until large air bubbles form, then turn over and cook for another 2 minutes or until browned.

  12. Melt vegan butter in a saucepan and brush each naan with the melted butter.
