Vegan Garlic Naan Bread
Ingredients
Wet
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 cup soft Mori-Nu tofu
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Dry
- 2 1/2 teaspoons instant yeast
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 3 1/2 cups bread flour
Optional
- 1 tablespoon Earth Balance vegan butter
- 2 cloves garlic
- Dried parsley
Preparation
Blend the wet ingredients until smooth.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients.
Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix with a heavy spoon until it comes together, then knead by hand for 5 minutes or use a stand mixer.
Transfer the dough to a large oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise for 2 hours. Punch down and let it rise for another hour.
Divide the dough into 10 equal pieces, roll into balls, place on a lightly oiled baking sheet, cover, and let rise for one hour.
Heat a cooking surface such as a baking steel, cast iron skillet, or frying pan. Flatten a dough ball until thin, place on the heated surface, cook until bubbles form and the bottom is golden, flip and cook for one more minute. Place the cooked naan in a kitchen towel to prevent drying out.
Serving
Serve the naan as is, or optionally melt 1 tablespoon of Earth Balance vegan butter, steep 2 minced or crushed garlic cloves in the hot butter, brush it on the naan, and sprinkle with dried parsley.
