Brazilian Chinese Cream Dessert with Gelatin

Ingredients

  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 3 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 (0.25 oz) packet gelatin, any flavor
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • 7 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3 egg whites

Preparation

  1. In a saucepan, combine sweetened condensed milk, egg yolks, cornstarch, and milk. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened

  2. Pour into a glass dish or serving glasses, filling only one-third of the container. Let cool completely

  3. Prepare the gelatin according to package directions and let cool until slightly thickened

  4. Beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar and beat until stiff peaks form. Gently fold in heavy cream

  5. Gently pour the slightly thickened gelatin over the cooled custard layer

  6. Spoon the meringue mixture over the gelatin layer

  7. Refrigerate until the gelatin is set and serve
