French Croque Monsieur Sandwich

Ingredients

  • 12 slices of white sandwich bread
  • 300 g cooked ham
  • 150 g Comté cheese or another cheese of your choice
  • Salt and pepper

Bechamel sauce

  • 450 g whole milk
  • 45 g all-purpose flour
  • 45 g butter
  • A pinch of salt
  • Nutmeg and pepper

Preparation

  1. For the bechamel, melt the butter, add the flour and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add the milk gradually, stirring. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Cook until thickened, then transfer to a bowl and cool in the refrigerator.

  2. Spread the bechamel on 2 slices of bread. Add grated cheese and ham. Cover with another slice of bread and press lightly.

  3. Spread more bechamel on top, grate additional cheese, and bake in a fan oven at 200°C for 15 minutes or until golden.
