Onion Vada and Thalipeeth from Single Batter

Ingredients

  • 2 medium sized sliced onions
  • 1 medium sized chopped tomato
  • 2 green chilies
  • 1 small piece of ginger
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped coriander leaves
  • Few curry leaves
  • Red chili powder to taste
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 2 spoons gram flour
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • Oil for frying
  • A spoonful of water

Preparation

  1. In a mixing jar, take one medium sized chopped tomato.

  2. Add two green chilies.

  3. Add one small piece of ginger.

  4. Add one teaspoon coriander seeds.

  5. Add one teaspoon cumin seeds.

  6. Coarsely crush it and add it in a mixing bowl.

  7. Take two medium sized sliced onions in the same bowl.

  8. Add one quarter cup finely chopped coriander leaves.

  9. Add a few curry leaves.

  10. Add red chili powder to taste.

  11. Add half teaspoon turmeric powder.

  12. Add salt to taste.

  13. Combine everything together until onion starts oozing water.

  14. Add one cup rice flour gradually.

  15. Add two spoons gram flour.

  16. Add one tablespoon oil.

  17. Add a spoonful of water and mix everything well.

Frying onion vada

  1. Make small round shape vadas from the mixture.

  2. Heat oil for deep frying vadas.

  3. Fry them until crisp and golden-brown.

Making thalipeeth

  1. Heat another pan to make thalipeeth from this mixture.

  2. Brush oil on it.

  3. Place some mixture and flatten with the help of hand.

  4. Make a small hole in the middle and drizzle some oil on it.

  5. Cook until golden-brown.

Notes

  1. This recipe uses the same batter for both fried Onion Vada and pan-cooked Thalipeeth to avoid frying if desired.
