Crispy Vegan Orange Tofu
Ingredients
Sauce
- 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
- 1.5 tablespoons tamari or soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon agave or maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/8 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
- pinch or two chilli flakes (optional)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water
Tofu
- 1 block extra firm tofu
- cornstarch (for coating)
Preparation
Optionally, for a chicken-like texture, freeze the tofu block in its liquid, thaw it, and squeeze out excess liquid.
Break the tofu into pieces and coat them generously in cornstarch.
Shallow fry the tofu in a non-stick pan with oil of choice over medium heat until golden and crispy on all sides.
While frying the tofu, mix all sauce ingredients and heat in a saucepan until the sauce thickens.
Pour the sauce over the fried tofu in the pan and stir until all pieces are evenly coated.
Serve with rice or noodles, vegetables, and garnish with green onions, toasted sesame seeds, and orange zest.
