Crispy Vegan Orange Tofu

Ingredients

Sauce

  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1.5 tbsp tamari or soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp agave or maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/8 tsp freshly grated ginger
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • pinch or two chilli flakes (optional)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch + 1 tbsp water (mixed together separately before adding to sauce)

Tofu

  • 1 block extra firm tofu
  • cornstarch (for coating)

Preparation

  1. Optionally, for a chicken-like texture, freeze the tofu in its liquid, thaw it, squeeze out excess liquid, break into pieces, and coat generously in cornstarch.

  2. Shallow fry the tofu in a non-stick pan at medium heat with oil of choice until golden and crispy on all sides.

  3. While frying the tofu, prepare the sauce by mixing all ingredients and heating in a saucepan until it starts to thicken.

  4. Pour the sauce into the pan with the tofu and stir together until all pieces are coated in the orange sauce.

  5. Serve with rice or noodles and your favorite vegetables, garnished with green onions, toasted sesame seeds, and orange zest.

Tips

  1. Use rapeseed or sunflower oil for frying, or any neutral oil of choice.

  2. This method creates a crispy texture, and the dish is versatile for bowls or as a main.
