Chinese Style Beef and Broccoli

Ingredients

  • 4 thin cut sirloin steaks, trimmed and sliced
  • 2 tsp cornflour
  • 1/2 tsp Chinese Five Spice
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp mild oil
  • 250g Tenderstem broccoli, halved lengthways
  • 3 garlic cloves crushed
  • 2 tsp ginger grated
  • 6 spring onions sliced

Sauce

  • 1 tsp cornflour
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 4 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp mirin or rice wine (or use white wine)
  • 4 tbsp sweet chilli sauce

Preparation

  1. Combine 2 tsp of the cornflour with the steak and black pepper. Set aside.

  2. Mix together your sauce ingredients.

  3. Add the Tenderstem to a large heated frying pan and add 75ml water. The water doesn’t need to cover the broccoli. Simmer for 4 minutes and drain.

  4. Set the broccoli aside and return the pan to the heat.

  5. Add the oil to the pan and when it’s hot cook the steak in two batches for a minute on each side. Don’t overcrowd the pan. You want the steak to take on colour but still be pink on the inside as it will continue to cook.

  6. Return all the beef to the pan and add the ginger and garlic. Stir fry for a minute before returning the broccoli.

  7. Pour over the sauce. Toss to combine everything and add the spring onions.

  8. Cook for 2 minutes. The sauce should thicken and coat the beef and broccoli. Serve.

Tips

  1. Use thin cut sirloin steaks and trim the fat for best results.

  2. The recipe serves 4 and can be prepared in about 15 minutes.
