Homemade Dried Lemon Peel

Ingredients

  • Fresh lemons
  • Other citrus fruits (optional, such as oranges, tangerines, mandarins, limes, grapefruit)

Preparation

  1. Wash the fruit before starting.

  2. Zest or peel the lemons with your preferred tool.

  3. Dry the peels either in the oven or by air drying on the counter.

  4. For oven drying, set the oven to the lowest temperature, spread the zest on a baking sheet lined with baking paper, and bake until dry and crispy.

  5. For counter drying, spread the peel on a dish or baking pan and let it dry for several days, tossing occasionally.

  6. Once dried, the peel can be left as is or ground into a powder using a spice grinder or blender.

  7. Store the dried peel in an airtight container.

Uses

  1. Use in seasoning mixes, teas, or baked goods.

  2. Sprinkle on salads, in marinades, or salad dressings.

  3. Add to sautéed, roasted, or grilled vegetables.

  4. Substitute for fresh lemon zest; one teaspoon dried equals one teaspoon fresh.

  5. Incorporate into homemade cleaners or body care products for added flavor.

Notes

  1. Dried lemon peel lasts up to a year when stored properly.

  2. This method works for various citrus fruits to reduce waste.
