Char Siu Tofu
Ingredients
- * Extra Firm Tofu block, 400g
- * Hoisin Sauce, 2 tbs
- * Shaoxing Rice Wine, 2 tbs [easy to find at Asian grocers)
- * Fermented Red Bean Curd, 1.5 tbs [again, should be easy to find at most Asian grocers]
- * Dark Soy Sauce, 1 tbs
- * 5-Spice, 0.5 tsp
- * Sesame Oil, 0.5 tsp
- * Honey, 3 tbs
- * Red Colouring, 0.25 tsp— completely optional - most Char siu has red food dye. I opted for all natural Annatto oil I had handy
Preparation
Mix everything (except for the honey!) in a small bowl or tray
Add tofu and coat it well with the marinade, cover and let sit for a minimum of 2 hours
Preheat oven to 200c, place tofu on a roasting rack and roast for 20mins
While tofu is roasting, save about 3 tbs of marinade in a seperate bowl. Add the honey to the marinade and mix well
Take tofu out and baste well. Place tofu back in for 5 mins. Do this two more times
Your tofu should have a sticky, caremalised outer. Now let that bad boy rest for 5 mins then you’re good to go
