Homemade Turkish Simit Bread

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 fresh yeast
  • 1 small egg
  • 1 heaping tablespoon sugar
  • 1 level teaspoon salt
  • Approximately 4 cups flour

Topping

  • 1/2 tea cup molasses
  • 1 cup water
  • Roasted sesame seeds

Preparation

  1. Put all ingredients except flour into a deep bowl and mix.

  2. Carefully add the flour and knead.

  3. If necessary, add oil to bring the dough together.

  4. Obtain a soft dough that does not stick to hands.

  5. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise at room temperature for 1 hour.

  6. After rising, divide into 12-16 pieces.

  7. Cover and let rest for 15 minutes.

  8. Shape each piece into a rope and braid two together.

  9. Then join the ends.

  10. Dip the simits first in the molasses water mixture, then in sesame seeds, and place on a tray.

  11. Cover and let rest on the tray for another 15-20 minutes.

  12. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (fan) until golden, about 15-20 minutes.
