Homemade Turkish Simit Bread
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 fresh yeast
- 1 small egg
- 1 heaping tablespoon sugar
- 1 level teaspoon salt
- Approximately 4 cups flour
Topping
- 1/2 tea cup molasses
- 1 cup water
- Roasted sesame seeds
Preparation
Put all ingredients except flour into a deep bowl and mix.
Carefully add the flour and knead.
If necessary, add oil to bring the dough together.
Obtain a soft dough that does not stick to hands.
Cover with plastic wrap and let rise at room temperature for 1 hour.
After rising, divide into 12-16 pieces.
Cover and let rest for 15 minutes.
Shape each piece into a rope and braid two together.
Then join the ends.
Dip the simits first in the molasses water mixture, then in sesame seeds, and place on a tray.
Cover and let rest on the tray for another 15-20 minutes.
Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (fan) until golden, about 15-20 minutes.
