Delicious Turkish Damascus Cookies

Ingredients

  • 3 eggs (one yolk reserved for topping)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teacup yogurt
  • 1 teacup vegetable oil
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 150 grams soft butter or margarine
  • 1 packet baking powder
  • 1 packet vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 5 to 5.5 cups flour

Preparation

  1. Place eggs and sugar in a bowl and mix with a hand whisk.

  2. Add yogurt and oil, then mix again.

  3. Add butter and mix by hand.

  4. Add the remaining ingredients to form a soft dough that does not stick to hands.

  5. Shape the dough into tangerine-sized balls.

  6. Place the balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  7. Brush the tops with the reserved egg yolk.

  8. Make cross-shaped cuts on top with a knife.

  9. Sprinkle with ground walnuts or hazelnuts.

  10. Bake in a preheated oven at 170 degrees Celsius for 35-40 minutes, checking occasionally.
