Vegan Rice Paper Bacon

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp canola oil
  • 2 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1/2 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp liquid smoke (alternative: smoked paprika)
  • 1/4 tsp paprika
  • 1/8 tsp ground black pepper
  • about 4 sheets of rice paper

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 200C (390F).

  2. Mix all the sauce ingredients together.

  3. Quickly soak two rice paper sheets in water, layer them together, and cut into strips with scissors immediately after soaking.

  4. Coat the rice paper strips with the sauce mixture.

  5. Bake for 6-7 minutes, watching closely to avoid burning.

  6. Allow to cool completely before serving to achieve crispiness.

Tips

  1. Layering two rice paper sheets helps achieve the right thickness; using a single layer may result in thinner bacon.

  2. Cut the rice paper quickly after soaking to prevent it from becoming too soft and difficult to handle.

  3. Monitor the baking process closely as it can burn easily, and consider staying nearby during cooking.
