Moong Dal Halwa Indian Dessert
Ingredients
- 1 cup moong dal (yellow lentils)
- 1 tbs besan (gram flour)
- 1 tbs suji / rava (semolina)
- 1/2 cup shudh desi ghee
- 1/4 cup roughly chopped cashews & almonds
- 400 ml milk
- 1-2 spoon kesar milk (saffron threads soaked in milk)
- 1 cup sugar
- 2-3 cardamom powder (optional)
Preparation
Rinse 1 cup moong dal with water.
Transfer it to a kitchen cloth and let it dry for 2-3 hours.
Coarsely grind it in a mixer.
Transfer the ground dal to a bowl.
Add 1 tbs besan (gram flour) to the mixture.
Add 1 tbs suji or rava (semolina) and mix it well.
Heat up a pan over medium heat.
Add 2-3 spoons of shudh desi ghee to the pan.
Add 1/4 cup roughly chopped cashews and almonds.
Fry them on medium heat and then transfer to a bowl.
Add the moong dal mixture to the remaining ghee in the pan.
Mix it and add a spoonful of ghee if the mixture is dry.
Roast well on medium heat for 7-8 minutes until it turns golden-brown.
Add 400 ml milk gradually while stirring.
Keep stirring to avoid lumps forming.
Add 1-2 spoons of kesar milk (saffron threads soaked in milk).
Mix it and add 1 spoon of ghee.
Cook until ghee releases from the sides.
Add 1 cup sugar and mix it thoroughly.
The halwa will become softer after adding sugar.
Add the fried dry fruits at the end.
Add the remaining ghee.
Add 2-3 cardamom powder if desired.
Transfer the halwa to a serving bowl.
Garnish with some dry fruits and kesar threads.
