Homemade Vegan Bagels with Versatile Toppings
Ingredients
- 2 ts dry yeast
- 1.5 tb sugar
- 1.5 cups warm water
- 3.5 cups flour
- 1.5 ts salt
- 2 tb almond milk
- Preferred seasoning (i love raisins and cinnamon or sesame seeds)
Preparation
Mix the sugar and 1/2 cup warm water
Pour in the yeast
Gently mix together
Let it sit for 15 minutes
Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl
Make a hole in the middle and add in the yeast mix in 3/4 of the remaining water
Mix well until it is a smooth dough
If it is too dry, add more water, if too wet, add a bit more flour
Knead the dough for about 10 minutes
Place in a bowl with a towel on top
Let rise for 1 hour, until it has doubled in size
Punch down the dough and set aside for 10 more minutes
Divide the dough in 8 pieces
Roll each in a ball and press a hole in the middle to create the bagel form
Place on a baking tray with baking paper
Place a towel on top and let it sit for 10 minutes
Preheat oven to 220 degrees C
Bring water to boil in a pot
Boil bagels in the water on both sides for about 2 minutes
Place on baking tray
Brush the dough with almond milk and the seasoning that you like
Bake for 20 minutes or until golden
Topping suggestions
Crunchy little treats that you can literally top with anything
Sweet with peanut butter and jam or cinnamon and raisins
Salty with plant-based cream cheese and tomatoes
Or anything else that you like
