Homemade Vegan Bagels with Versatile Toppings

Ingredients

  • 2 ts dry yeast
  • 1.5 tb sugar
  • 1.5 cups warm water
  • 3.5 cups flour
  • 1.5 ts salt
  • 2 tb almond milk
  • Preferred seasoning (i love raisins and cinnamon or sesame seeds)

Preparation

  1. Mix the sugar and 1/2 cup warm water

  2. Pour in the yeast

  3. Gently mix together

  4. Let it sit for 15 minutes

  5. Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl

  6. Make a hole in the middle and add in the yeast mix in 3/4 of the remaining water

  7. Mix well until it is a smooth dough

  8. If it is too dry, add more water, if too wet, add a bit more flour

  9. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes

  10. Place in a bowl with a towel on top

  11. Let rise for 1 hour, until it has doubled in size

  12. Punch down the dough and set aside for 10 more minutes

  13. Divide the dough in 8 pieces

  14. Roll each in a ball and press a hole in the middle to create the bagel form

  15. Place on a baking tray with baking paper

  16. Place a towel on top and let it sit for 10 minutes

  17. Preheat oven to 220 degrees C

  18. Bring water to boil in a pot

  19. Boil bagels in the water on both sides for about 2 minutes

  20. Place on baking tray

  21. Brush the dough with almond milk and the seasoning that you like

  22. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden

Topping suggestions

  1. Crunchy little treats that you can literally top with anything

  2. Sweet with peanut butter and jam or cinnamon and raisins

  3. Salty with plant-based cream cheese and tomatoes

  4. Or anything else that you like

  5. They are easier to make than you think and are such a good snack or breakfast
